BRUNO

OCTOBER 2023 UPDATE:

BRUNO IS NOW READY FOR HIS FOREVER HOME 😃

Requirements for Bruno will be no children, possibly a calm female dog and a calm, quiet environment. This boy has come a long way but will need to still be managed.

JUNE 2023

As you followers of the page, you know that we have taken in many dogs over the years. Most are rehomed within a month or so of coming into us, yet others take a lot of time, patience and understanding before they are ready to take that next step, into their forever home.

Bruno has been under Large Breed Dog Rescue since October 2022, here is his story so far:

Bruno is a 2 year old medium size cross breed who was "alpha rolled" by his previous owner, he would pin and wrestle him to the floor and when Bruno had enough and snapped the owner took him to the vets to be PTS.

Luckily the vet and vet nurse saw what was happening and got the owner to sign him over while they found rescue back up for him.

This is where Ellie from Abbey Boarding Kennels heard of him and spoke to Sharon who said yes to helping this poor boy.

Bruno is housed with Ellie up in the North East, with LBDR funding all treatment and kenneling costs.

Bruno arrived with a muzzle on which took some courage to remove as he was so scared he wouldn't go near anyone. He was assessed by Ellie and a dog behaviourist who both said it was going to be a long, slow journey while he builds confidence in people again.

To start with the only person to see to Bruno was Ellie who would spend time sitting outside his kennel just talking to him and putting treats through for him to take when ready.

Over a couple of months Bruno built confidence in Ellie and would allow her to come in and clean the same section of his kennel he was in.

More volunteers came to visit and sit outside talking to him. Bruno began taking treats from Ellie and others through the bars. He will sit, lift his paw and nose to fence to touch your hand for treats which he loves, he is not fussy with treats which is great for training.

He is building even more confidence in Ellie who is his most regular person and will let her sit on the floor of his kennel. She will surround herself in treats and he pushes in to find them even if they are very close and under her legs.

There is still no stroking as all needs to be on Bruno’s terms. Trying to rush confidence building can knock them back steps at a time. The door to his kennel was left open when it was safe to do so and Bruno never wanted out.

Gradually he put 1 then 2 paws out and that went on for more than a few weeks but it was enough for him.

Then magically around a month ago Bruno came fully out when Ellie called him and he is loving life running round the paddock at high speeds.

It has taken 6 1/2 long months for Bruno to feel safe enough to venture that far. There is still no stroking, this will be one of the next steps along with more people he knows going into the paddock with him and playing.

As you can see this isn't a short journey Bruno is having and it is still going to be many months of confidence building as at the moment there is no lead on him for normal walks. Every day he is improving.
